World Food Programme as a disaster relief organization: Haiti Earthquake, 2010 (2011 Report)

Table of Contents

Where we looked

All of the below was examined in December 2010.

How much did the organization raise and how much did it spend?

As of January 6, 2011, the World Food Program reported donations totaling about $461 million for four operations in Haiti (two food assistance operations and two logistics operations.)1

We did not find data on how much the WFP has spent on its earthquake relief efforts.

How specific is the organization about how it spent its funds?

We found budgets (planned spending),2 but did not find information on WFP's actual expenditures for its response to the earthquake in Haiti.

We also found reports on the number of meals WFP planned to distribute3 and number of people being reached by WFP's school feeding, cash and food for work, and supplementary feeding programs as of October 2010.4

Non-disaster relief activities

  • For each of its four program areas (emergency operations, relief and rehabilitation, development operations and special operations), WFP presents a searchable database with operations documents for each project. The operations documents appear to be fairly detailed, including numbers of tons of food that will be delivered to specific locations.5
    • The operations documents seem to give a very detailed sense of WFP's activities.
  • WFP published a 5-Year strategic plan (2008-2013) in which it lays out its long-term goals. 6
