How specific is the organization about how it spent its funds?
PIH published a report breaking down its spending into the types of aid it provided (e.g., facility-based care, medical services within camps for IDPs, mental health and psychsocial services) and the costs of supporting its activities (e.g., communications/IT equipment, transportation/logistics).9
PIH also published a report detailing the outputs of its programs: the numbers of patients treated and numbers receiving other services.10
Non-disaster relief activities
PIH's most recent annual report11 provides a breakdown of funds by country/program.12 For each country/program, there is a lengthy discussion earlier in the report. For each of the major programs (these account collectively for 88% of total expenses according to the funding breakdown), the discussion of activities is accompanied by basic figures on outputs (patients treated, students given tuition support, etc.) that appear comprehensive.13
Compared to the information given by most disaster relief charities we've examined, we find this to be an unusually clear and concrete picture of how funds are spent and what activities are carried out.

Example: for Malawi, PIH states that there were 17606 patients tested for HIV, 2684 HIV patients receiving antiretroviral therapy, 332619 outpatient visits across 12 facilities, 889 children receiving tuition support, 12 clean water points constructed, and 7 antiretroviral therapy sites.
