[Added December 19, 2016: GiveWell's experimental work is now known as GiveWell Incubation Grants.]
Good Ventures made a $34,382 grant to IDinsight (www.idinsight.org) as part of our project to support the development of new GiveWell top charities (more in this blog post).
We and IDinsight generated a list of several programs (described in IDinsight Concept Note, pages 4-7) that (1) have been evaluated by a single randomized controlled trial which found strong results, but (2) additional studies have not been undertaken to determine whether the results can be replicated, and (3) as far as we know, are not currently being scaled up by an existing organization.
We and IDinsight have tentatively chosen the incentives for immunization program (@IDInsight Concept Note@, pages 4-5) and expect its implementation to take place in India, though these both may change. This grant will support phase 2 of the initiative described in @IDInsight Concept Note@, pages 2-4, "identify an appropriate context and partner for the selected intervention."
Note that normally, IDinsight works in a demand-driven manner in which policymakers and managers approach IDinsight to evaluate program options to guide their own decision-making. This project, which aims to identify and convince an implementing partner to implement a new program, represents a new approach for IDinsight.
